The Ridley Bronze Project
Preserving Canada’s Only Heritage Turkey – The Ridley Bronze Turkey
The genetics and significance of this breed are at risk.
Historically, the Ridley Bronze Turkey did not hatch all white poults. Many bloodlines of the Ridley Bronze have been crossed with other turkeys, and are producing all white offspring. The conservation of Canada’s only surviving heritage turkey and it’s historical significance is reliant on maintaining it true to the original temperament, form and colour as it was in the 1940’s and when the University of SK held flocks.
The conservation of the Ridley Bronze Turkey not only preserves part of the history of farming in Canada, but ensures that small farms can have access to a docile, intelligent, and hardy breed of turkey that can naturally reproduce.
We are maintaining multiple breeding flocks that are direct descendants of the University of Saskatchewan with no outside introductions. We do not raise any other kind of turkey and are dedicated to preserving this breed.
Breed Identification and History
In the 1940s, J. H. Richardson of Saltcoats Saskatchewan spent an undetermined amount of time travelling throughout Canada and the US seeking out the best turkey breeding stock available. He was specifically looking for qualities of gentle temperament, personable nature, and natural ability to reproduce and forage.
Our Story
Historically, the Ridley Bronze Turkey did not hatch all white poults. Many bloodlines of the Ridley Bronze have been crossed with other turkeys, and are producing all white offspring.
Order Eggs
The Ridley Bronze Project ships Ridley Bronze Turkey hatching eggs Canada-wide. To maintain genetic diversity and fertility, we have a closed breeding program with multiple flocks.
